Queens' offers two levels of sports bursaries:
1) Minor grants for sport (“Q550 bursaries”): up to £150 per annum (academic year)– apply any time
What for? Contributions to costs incurred when participating, normally, in College sports and for subscriptions to join University sports clubs.
Example applications: for sports equipment, travel to matches etc
Q550 bursaries are managed by the Senior Treasurer of the College Union
Q550 refers to the campaign conducted to raise funds in 1997 – the 550th anniversary of the College’s foundation
2) Major bursaries for sport (“Endowed bursaries”): up to £500
What for? Contributions to costs incurred when participating, normally, in elite-level sport e.g. when representing the University, normally at Blue, national or international level.
Example applications: for training camps and competitions in Varsity matches, nationally and internationally, for specialist sports equipment, for travel to fixtures and for larger subscriptions.
Application deadline is by the end of each term and is only dealt with after the end of each term
Major bursaries are managed by three Fellows: currently Prof Marie Edmonds (Vice President), Dr David Butterfield (Praelector) and Mr Rowan Kitt (Development Director)
Major bursaries have been donated by individuals and normally carry the name of the donor.
Students may also apply for an award from the Nelson Blues Fund.
What for? If you win a half-Blue (formal 2nd team University colours) or a Blue.
Raised through the generosity of alumni and friends of the College, to cover the costs of purchasing, normally, University colours (i.e. Blues and half-Blues jackets and scarves). This can include Crusaders, Falcons, LX Club and Lightweight colours.
