New Fellows and members introduce their work

In the Michaelmas term, Queens' SCR talks give new Fellows and academic members of the College a chance to introduce themselves and present their research to the Senior Combination Room (SCR, consisting of Queens' Fellows, Postdoctoral Research Associates and other honorary members).

Yesterday evening, presentations were made by:
  • Dr Jane Garrison, Bye-Fellow in Psychological and Behavioural Sciences. Dr Garrison is a cognitive neuroscientist and researches the brain basis of reality monitoring.
  • Dr Paul Bambrough, Bye-Fellow in Medical and Veterinary Sciences, a cardiologist working at the Royal Papworth Hospital. Dr Bambrough's research interests are cardiac intervention and TAVI and the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
  • Dr Nicolaus Heuer, Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, whose research area is Geometric Groups Theory.
  • Dr Mirjana Efremova, Postdoctoral Research Associate, who researches cell-cell communication networks using single-cell genomics with Dr. Sarah Teichmann at the Wellcome Sanger Institute. (Photograph top right).

Last week, on Monday 28th October, talks came from:

  • Dr Jinqi Fu, Queens' Postdoctoral Research Associate, currently developing an in-situ barcoding technology to stably integrate unique DNA sequence as "name tag" into the genomes of mammalian cells.
  • Dr Eduardo Machicado, Queens' Postdoctoral Research Associate, whose research focusses on attempting to provide a more nuanced perspective on the effect of climate change in economic development and social and political conflict. (Photograph middle right)

The second week of talks, on Monday 21st October, were given by:

  • Dr Anja Schmidt, Bye-Fellow in Geography and Chemistry. Dr Schmidt researches the climate and environmental impacts of volcanic eruptions as an Interdisciplinary Lecturer in Climate Modelling jointly affiliated with the Departments of Geography and Chemistry.
  • Dr Joao Rodrigues, Bye-Fellow in Natural Sciences, specialising in projections of future Arctic sea ice distributions of thickness, concentration and area from simulations of global climate models.
  • Dr Jennifer Cobbe, Postdoctoral Research Associate based in the Computer Laboratory, researching law and regulation of new and emerging technologies (typically but not exclusively involving AI/machine learning).
  • Dr Christopher Clark, Bye-Fellow in Engineering, whose research focusses on turbomachinery.

The first of this series of talks took place on Monday 14th October, and included presentations by:

  • Ruth Lawlor, Junior Research Fellow in History, specialising in the United States in the world and with particular interest in race, gender, nation, and empire.
  • Alice Monter, French Lectrice
  • Dr Chen Jiang, Postdoctoral Research Associate based at the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, focussing on flexible electronics for human-machine interface, following a PhD in Engineering at Queens'. (Photograph below right).
  • Dr Tamsin Spelman, Postdoctoral Research Associate based at the Sainsbury Laboratory in Professor Henrik Jonsson's group, working on the deformation of plant cell nuclei when cells are subjected to stress.
