Queens' PhD student's start-up wins award

A startup co-founded by Dante McGrath, an Engineering PhD student at Queens’, has been awarded top prize at the Medical Technology Venture Competition, run by the Cambridge Judge Business School.

The Medical Technology Venture Competition recognises startups in the early stages of developing a novel medical technology with commercial potential. The top prize is £10,000 and a place on Accelerate Cambridge, where Dante and co-founder Dr Nidhin Laji will receive specialist support towards their startup, Congenita Ltd.

The product, developed by Dr Laji, is a 3D modelling software for heart surgery in newborn children. It provides surgeons with a tailored map in the operating theatre to guide procedures in which survival greatly depends on the technical accuracy of minuscule incisions.

Congenita have gained traction within the Cambridge Cluster, having also won the inaugural Trinity Bradfield Prize last October. The prize, awarded by Nobel Laureate Sir Greg Winter, included £5,000 funding and support from The Bradfield Centre. With this strong momentum, Dante and Nidhin hope to engage surgical champions who are willing to conduct trials.
