Philip Lawrence (1966) murder: 20 years on

Today we remember Philip Lawrence (1966), who read English at Queens'.

Philip Lawrence was a London-based headmaster who was stabbed outside the gates of his school when he went to the aid of a pupil who was being attacked by a gang on 8 December 1995.

Philip Lawrence was posthumously awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal (QGM) on 14 June 1997. The Philip Lawrence Awards, first presented in 1997, were instituted by the then Home Secretary Michael Howard in Lawrence's honour. They honour outstanding achievement by young people aged between 11 and 20. Lawrence's widow, Frances, was appointed a Member of the British Empire in the 2009 Birthday Honours for services to charity, for her role in setting up the award. These awards celebrate young people who are making a difference in their communities, breaking down barriers, tackling local issues and making lives better for themselves and others.
