General Admission 2019

Degree Congregations are held at the Senate House, also known as the Regent House, on various dates throughout the year. The Congregation of the Senate House is one of the oldest traditions in the University and its origins can be traced back some 800 years.

General Admission for Queens’ students receiving any of the following degrees is Thursday, 27 June 2019: MMath, MEng, MSci, VetMB, BA, and BTh Degrees.

Your degree will not be officially awarded to you until you have participated in the annual Congregation of the Senate House, either in person or in absence. Your degree certificate will only be issued once your degree has been conferred.  Registration for the Congregation is available now via your CamSIS Self-Service page.  Please refer to the ‘Registration’ section below for further information.

Graduands with outstanding College or University bills may not be permitted to graduate in person.

If you choose to receive your degree in person, you will be invited to attend the following functions: Praelector's Address, Tutors’ Drinks Reception, Senate House Ceremony and Graduation Luncheon.

All the information you need is available on this website via the links listed below. It is very important that you read the information and then book the services you require in good time (i.e., academic dress hire, portrait photography, excess residence and guest rooms).

The Praelector’s Address to graduands will be held on the evening of Wednesday 26 June 2019. It is essential that all graduands attend the Praelector’s Address, since the Praelector will use this occasion to give important instructions relating to the following day’s ceremony. The Tutors’ Reception for graduands follows the Address.

Graduands of Queens’ College are presented in two sessions at the Senate House.  All graduands leave the College together and process to the Senate House. The first session is for graduands receiving the following degrees: MMath, MEng, MSci, VetMB.  Graduands for the second session (receiving BA and BTh Degrees) wait in Great St Mary’s Church until called to the Senate House.

After the graduation ceremony on Thursday 27 June 2019, the Degree Luncheon takes place for graduates and their guests (strictly a maximum of four guests for the Luncheon).

Registration

Booking for Degree Day is made via your CamSIS Self Service page - please select 'Apply for Graduation'. You can apply to have your degree awarded in person or in absence.  Registration is very simple and should only take a few minutes to complete.  Please note the deadline for registration is 3 May 2019.

Academic Dress

It is possible to hire academic robes from several tailors in Cambridge. Ede & Ravenscroft  have an on-line service (which is open now) and will deliver to College on Wednesday 26 June for your collection between 13.00 - 16.00 in the Angevin Room. It is recommended that you collect your order in good time. Please return it to the Angevin Room and place it in the baskets before 1700 on Thursday. You are, of course, free to make alternative arrangements if you wish. Remember that you must be in full academic dress for the Degree Photograph at 11.40 (tbc) on the Thursday, so it is essential that you take possession of all hired items on the Wednesday.

Gowns and hoods should not be worn at the Praelector’s Address on Wednesday or to the Luncheon on Thursday.

Photography

Lafayette Photography will take a group photograph at 11.45 (tbc) on Thursday, 27 June, in Walnut Tree Court. Copies of this photograph will be on sale from the Porters' Lodge later in the day.  Lafayette photographers will also be available to take your Graduation Day Portraits in Walnut Treet Court between 09.00 and 10.45 (tbc).  Please book early to avoid disappointment.

If you graduate in person, your photograph will be taken at the moment your degree is conferred.  Senate House photography will be posted online within seven days.

Please note that guests are not permitted to take photographs while inside the Senate House.
