The Cambridge History of Art course covers a wide spectrum of art and architecture from all over the world, from antiquity to modern and contemporary periods. The aim is to foster a wide and deep understanding of art and architecture, and to help students develop visual literacy and awareness, as well as a range of critical and analytical skills.

Students are supervised by the lecturers of the various courses throughout their studies and arrangements for this are agreed by the Director of Studies. The Director of Studies supervises and reads the final draft of the Part I (Year 1) and Part II (Year 3) dissertations; if the student has selected a field of art history that the Director of Studies does not specialise in, a second supervisor who specialises in this area will also be found.
