John Waddington Phillips Hubbard

27/06/1934–03/12/2025

John was an undergraduate at Queens’ College from 1955 to 1958, where he studied Modern Languages. Before studying at the College, he spent two years completing National Service. After his initial basic training, John enrolled at the Joint Services School for Linguists in Bodmin, following an interview at the War Office in London. He was subsequently selected to train as a Russian interpreter at the School of Slavonic Studies in Cambridge.

Once graduated from Queens’ College in 1958, John went on to enjoy a long career in the Civil Service.

John’s father, Rev. John Waddington Hubb ard (1913), and his late brother, Rev. Laurence Arthur Hubbard (1957), were also members of the College.

John was a devoted family man. He leaves his wife, Nancy, of 66 years, four children, and ten grandchildren. He met Nancy while sharing a room at the College with her twin brother, John Cowell Sutcliffe-Braithwaite (1955). Nancy and her twin brother’s father, George Braithwaite (1923), was also previously a member of the College.

John was a man of great intellect who was also exceptionally down to earth and great fun. He was a devout Christian and enjoyed The Times crossword, reading, and producing artwork. He also had a great talent for creative writing, producing many children’s stories for his children and grandchildren over the years.

John’s physical health declined during the last six months of his life, but his great intellect remained intact throughout this time. He died aged 91, peacefully at home with his family.

He will be greatly missed by so many.
