JOHN DAVID UPTON GREEN

2nd November 1945 to 28th September 2025

David Green (pictured second from left) matriculated in 1964, after receiving an Exhibition to read History. He often spoke of his time at Queens’ with great fondness, having made there a number of lifelong long friends. After graduation, initially he worked for Hambros, the merchant bank, for 14 years. In 1982, he changed direction and was appointed Finance Director of The London Voluntary Service Council, the principal umbrella body for all voluntary organisations in the capital, where he remained for the next decade. He then became Clerk to the Governors of Cripplegate Foundation, a grant-giving trust in The City of London and Islington where he lived, and St Luke’s Parochial Trust which ran a thriving community centre. There he managed combined assets of over £46 million and 19 staff. He also acted as Clerk to the Governors of Cripplegate Schools Foundation which ran the prestigious Lady Eleanor Holles School.

David was a great supporter of charity, both professionally and individually. He was also a keen volunteer and active in the City of London as a leading member and one time Master of Cripplegate Ward Club. Amongst many other positions, he was Treasurer of The Patients Association, Association of Charitable Foundations, and The British Home and Hospital for Incurables where he also served as Deputy Chairman. He also chaired Islington Boat Club, Three Corners Trust, and Islington Voluntary Action Council . In his spare time, he enjoyed theatre and classical music concerts.

David was pleased to be given a private tour of Queens’ last year, reminiscing about time spent studying in the Old Library and acting in the drama club. As an Executor of his Estate, I was not surprised that he left his joint largest charitable bequest to his alma mater, as he believed strongly in the power of education to change lives. He will be missed by his family and friends.
