Queens' eighth Distinguished Lecture in Law

The eighth Distinguished Lecture in Law was delivered on Wednesday 21st February 2024 by Lady Vivien Rose of Colmworth DBE PC, a Justice of the Supreme Court and member of the Privy Council. Her lecture addressed the subject, 'The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council: “relic of empire” or “useful body”?'.

Lady Rose discussed the history of the JCPC, a court of final appeal for the UK Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies, and described it as 'an evolving institution generating important case law'. She provided an insight into some of the recent work of the Board and an awareness of the influence of its jurisprudence, from fishing rights in the Cook Islands to the death penalty in Jamaica. Audience members were invited to ask Lady Rose questions following her talk.

"I hope that the JCPC continues to evolve and to contribute to the development of law across the globe on questions of considerable contemporary importance."
Lady Rose of Colmworth

This lecture was postponed to 2024 following the sudden passing of Dr Emily Webster, Director of Studies in Land Economy and a Teaching Fellow in Law. Queens' has hosted the Lecture in Law annually since 2015, allowing both Members of the College and distinguished guests to participate in the latest thinking on the law.

Several prizes and studentships were awarded on the night, presented by Lady Rose. The lecture and prizes are kindly sponsored by Redress Solutions PLC, courtesy of Mr Marius Nasta (Queens’ LLM, 1990) and Mr Michael Zuckerman.
