Professor Fentiman receives honorary degree from the University of Cyprus

Congratulations to Professor Richard Fentiman on receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Cyprus.

Professor Richard Fentiman, the Arthur Armitage Fellow in Law at Queens’, received the degree of Doctor honoris causa from the University of Cyprus at a ceremony in Nicosia.

Richard is Professor of Private International Law at Cambridge. The Resolution awarding the degree referred to Richard’s role in creating a new paradigm for private international law and his contribution to the subject across the world. He was described as ‘A model of an academic and teacher, whose contribution to legal scholarship transcends the subject he serves and the legal tradition he represents’.

After the degree was awarded, Richard gave a speech and reflected on his academic work in an address on the theme of Principle and Pragmatism in Private International Law.

There were Queens’ members in attendance at the ceremony, including Richard’s wife Alicia (1982) and Eros Nicolaou (2020), who is in his second year reading Law and lives in Cyprus.

Richard supervises undergraduates in the Conflict of Laws and teaches the popular LLM course on International Commercial Litigation. He recently celebrated 40 years as a Fellow of Queens’ and will retire in September 2023. In celebration of his retirement, the Governing Body proposes to endow The Richard Fentiman Fellowship in Law.

Professor Fentiman will deliver the seventh Queens’ Distinguished Lecture in Law in October 2022.
