Rokos-Menon Visiting Senior Research Fellowship 2025/26

Applications are invited for a Visiting Senior Research Fellowship at Queens’ College, Cambridge (UK) for the academic year 2025/26.

The College seeks to appoint a Visiting Senior Research Fellow with a current academic appointment or equivalent from a background that is currently underrepresented on the College’s fellowship and in UK Higher Education more generally. Applications would be particularly welcome from those from the Global Majority, including people who are Black, Asian, Brown, or dual-heritage, and Indigenous people, people from the global south, and people from small island nations.

This limited-term appointment would allow the successful candidate to carry out a specific research project, free of other commitments. It would be ideally suited to someone wanting to spend a sabbatical engaged in research in the University of Cambridge or a recognised research establishment in Cambridge. The tenure is for up to a year and cannot be extended. The successful candidate would be expected to conduct their own research, to engage with other scholars within the College and Cambridge more generally, to build up connections that benefit their own careers and institutions and enrich life in Queens’ by broadening our own perspectives.

The successful candidate will normally have completed at least three years of postdoctoral research and published a significant body of work. They will be expected to be resident in Cambridge for most of their fellowship, although it will be possible to travel for research purposes or to attend conferences.

While there is no stipend attached to the fellowship, the college will meet travel expenses and provide housing (including for families), as well as helping with visa costs as necessary, and providing a generous research allowance. The successful candidate will be elected as a Bye Fellow which brings with it membership of the Senior Combination Room and dining rights. As a Bye Fellow, the Visiting Senior Research Fellow is bound both by the College’s statutes and Academic Staff orders.

Visiting Senior Research Fellows will be expected to participate in the intellectual and social life of the College, as well as presenting their research to a public audience at some point during their tenure.

The College will be able to ensure that the Visiting Senior Research Fellow is able to use the University Library and some departmental libraries. The College cannot secure research facilities within departments so it would be helpful if applicants indicate at the time of application whether connections have already been established with relevant departments with a view to obtaining formal visitor status and access to bench space, if appropriate.

Visiting Senior Research Fellows cannot normally hold this appointment in conjunction with a similar appointment or membership of another Cambridge or Oxford college.

Applications should be submitted using the CASC Fellowship Application System (FAS) by 17 January 2025.

Applicants should provide: (a) an up-to-date curriculum vitae with details of the applicant’s academic and professional record and a list of publications (b) a statement of not more than 1,500 words outlining the research to be undertaken while at Cambridge; (c) a covering letter of no more than two sides of A4 indicating the benefits both the applicant and the College might gain from the appointment, any other awards applied for and not yet decided, likely accommodation needs and any current connection/collaboration with Fellows of Queens’ and confirmation that contact with the relevant Faculty/Department has been, or is being, made with a view to establishing formal visiting status there; (d) the names and contact details of two referees. Referees will be contacted for shortlisted candidates.

There are no interviews but the College will want to discuss practicalities with the successful applicant. Applicants should expect to be notified of the result of their application by early March 2025 at the latest. Any informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Andrew Thompson, Senior Tutor at senior.tutor@queens.cam.ac.uk.
