Standing ovation for Wagner, Reeve and Fry

A huge audience rose to applaud the Wagner event held in Chapel, in which Stephen Fry enthused about his great passion for Richard Wagner’s music and Edward Reeve played his own transcriptions of Wagner’s music on the pianoforte.

Stephen told the 180-strong mix of Fellows, alumni and students that he owes his love of Wagner to Queens’: during his time as an undergraduate he was invited to listen to box set records of Wagner by Fellows such as The Reverend Dr Brian Hebblethwaite (who was present at the event) and former Senior Tutor, Dr John Green. Stephen, in 2010, explored his love for Wagner in the BBC documentary Wagner and Me, and he has since been the presenter of choice for cinema and television broadcasts concerning the famous, controversial German composer.

Edward Reeve currently holds the Aliki Vatikioti Postgraduate Studentship in Music at Queens’ having graduated in the summer with a double Starred First. The Evening of Wagner event was his brainchild and was a resounding success.

The evening raised £4,500 for The Friends of Queens' Music, established in 2014 to support all musical activities of students at the College.
