Record number of Welsh students made offers to study at Oxbridge

Admissions data released today shows that a record number of Welsh students have been offered places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

This is partly due to a Welsh Government initiative called Seren, which has been encouraging students at state sixth forms and colleges across Wales to apply to leading universities. Each year, approximately 2,000 of the most academically able students join the network and are invited to attend workshops, seminars and higher education outreach events.

Of the 212 Welsh students who applied to Cambridge, 67 have been offered a place this September, the highest number and rate of offers (31%) in recent years.

Queens' student and JCR Vice President Tomos Wood is from Anglesey, in Wales. He commented:

I was assured that Cambridge was in fact very accessible for students like me. In Cambridge, I see Welsh students arrive, grow and succeed, despite not having been sure of themselves when applying at school. Top universities know that Welsh students have massive potential and so the most important thing Seren does is bolster students’ confidence."
