Outreach News: The Brilliant Club Scholars' Programme Launch held in Queens'

We were delighted to host The Brilliant Club Scholars’ Programme Launch Trip at Queens’ yesterday. This programme recruits and trains doctoral and postdoctoral researchers, placing them in schools to deliver programmes of university-style tutorials to emulate the learning that students experience at highly selective universities.

The Brilliant Club is an award-winning charity that exists to increase the number of pupils from underrepresented backgrounds progressing to highly-selective universities, by mobilising the PhD community to share its academic expertise with state schools.

The launch trip marked the beginning of this cycle of the programme and was attended both by the doctoral/postdoctoral tutors and the school pupils who will be taking part in the scheme. The pupils had a chance to meet their tutor, take a look around Queens’ and meet current students, giving them an insight into life at Cambridge University.

For the next five weeks, the tutors will spend half a day per week in schools, delivering two tutorials on each visit to two groups of six pupils. The pupils will complete weekly reading and writing assignment leading up to a final, extended assignment, on which they will receive two one-on-one feedback tutorials. The programme will end in May with a Graduation event at another University, giving the pupils a chance to explore another highly-selective university.
