Lent week 7 sporting round-up

Queens' has had a good weekend of sporting activities, with successes both for College teams and Queens' students representing the University in Varsity competitions.

Congratulations to the Queens' Women's Football team, who won their Cuppers semi-final 3-0 against a combined St John's and King's team on Sunday morning. The final will be held tomorrow, Saturday 7th March, at 3pm on Pembroke playing fields - supporters are very welcome!

The men's football team is also through to the Cuppers finals, which will be played on 1st May in the evening.

Queens' was also well-represented in the University teams over the weekend, as various sports had their Varsity matches against Oxford. A huge well done to the CU Karate Club, whose women's captain is Q student Eleanor Lee, who won their Varsity competition on Saturday, winning in all three categories (men's, women's and mixed). Queens' student Caitlin Sargeant is acting Women's Captain of the CU Judo team, who also had their Varsity match over the weekend. Caitlin was joined on the team by another Anna Benger, a Q student who had only been training for four months. The Varsity match was her first experience of competitive judo and, although she lost her fight, she did the team very proud putting up a good fight against a more experienced opponent. Overall, the CU Judo club lost the Varsity competition, although captain Caitlin convincingly won her fight.

The Varsity Judo competition celebrated it's 90th anniversary this year, making it the oldest Judo competition outside of Japan. Photo, right: the women's judo team, with Caitlin in the top left and Anna bottom right.

In the Varsity water polo match, Douglas van Niekerk competed in the first team who sadly lost 12-15, whilst Balínt Szépfalvi and Kit Gallagher played for the second team and won by the same score, 15-12! Photo, left, the CU Waterpolo teams before their matches.

Tabbie Brough is currently the captain of the CU Ladies Netball team, along with fellow Q student Laura Curtis. They had their Varsity match against Oxford over the weekend, which they unfortunately lost, followed by a dinner at Queens'. Photo, right: the CULNC team at their dinner.

Queens' has also had a successful time in the Mixed Lacrosse league. Over the last year, our team has made an impressive rise from division three to the top of division one - a 3-0 victory over St John's last weekend brings our team to the top of the league and undefeated all season!

Our men's rugby team are also through to the Shield final after a decisive 15-8 victory over Homerton in the Shield semi-final last weekend. Congratulations especially to our scorers: Archie Smeaton, Joel Reilly and Lex van der Stoep. You can cheer on the team in the final on 25th April at the Grange Road pitches.
