Double win for Cambridge at the Varsity Rugby Matches

It was an excellent day for Cambridge University Rugby as strong performances from both the men's and women's teams saw the Light Blues win both Varsity Matches against Oxford at Twickenham yesterday.

The final scores were Cambridge 8 - 5 Oxford in the women's match and Cambridge 15 - 0 Oxford in the men's. A minute's silence was held before the men's match in memory of Saskia Jones (2017) and Jack Merritt.

Three Queens' students played in the men's match, with former international players James Horwill and Flip van der Merwe (both EMBA, 2019) on the pitch from the start and Archie Smeaton (Natural Sciences, 2019) joining as a replacement. We think that Archie is our first male fresher rugby Blue since Walt Jones (1968) - if you know otherwise, please let us know!

They were supported by a strong turnout of College members in the crowd. Photo, right: Walt Jones (1968), John Spencer (1967), former international rugby player, and Jacko Page (1967). Many congratulations to all the players on a very successful day!
