Celebrating music with the Tyro Prize

The second Tyro Prize concert, a great display of Queens’ students' musical talents, took place on Monday night and was won by Daniel Morales (2017).

The Prize was generously endowed by the late Professor Peter Watson (1950 and Fellow Commoner), a distinguished opthalmologist and founder of the Cambridge Eye Trust. It encourages musical “tyros” who may not be serious musicians, but who play an instrument, to continue to play and enjoy music at Queens’. We were delighted to welcome members of Professor Watson’s family back to Queens’ for the evening.

This year 13 students took part, including pianists, violinists, singers, an erhu player and a bagpiper. Judges, Professor Christopher Pountain (1966 and Life Fellow), Dr Thomas Forster (Fellow), and MagSoc president Michaela Higham (2015) were faced with a very difficult decision but selected Daniel as a worthy winner. His prize is £100 which he can put towards furthering his musical interests.
