Undergraduate Freshers

Dear first year undergraduates,

Welcome to Queens’ College and the University of Cambridge. Each year, Freshers’ Week at Queens’ College is designed to celebrate your admission into the college and to help you settle into college and academic life. This year, our programme is set out to accomplish these goals while respecting the need to keep our community—including students, staff, fellows, and local residents—safe.

This programme features talks, meetings, and useful workshops with fellows, staff, and students. You can view the Freshers’ Week programme via our dedicated freshers website to which you will receive access via email in September, or you can download a copy from our website.

Meet Your Director of Studies (DoS)

During Freshers’ Week you will have the opportunity to meet with your DoS and start to plan your studies at Cambridge. These meetings are important and you should give them priority over any other events. Check your emails from your DoS and make sure that you have made any preparations that he or she has asked for.

Most DoS meetings will be held on Monday, 6th October (some time between 09.00 and 18.00). Your DoS will contact you to let you know exactly where and when to meet. If you are not sure of arrangements, please contact your DoS.

Library Induction

Queens’ Library plays an active part in the wider University of Cambridge library system which makes available to you a colossal range of information in terms of electronic and printed books. An essential part of your studies over the coming years will be to acquire skills to find, evaluate and use the vast range of information resources available in your subject area.

The Library induction provides a critical first step in the process of gaining these skills, and you’ll find dates and times for the introduction for your subject on this page. During this session, you’ll be introduced to your subject section, so that you can successfully explore and browse the collection. You’ll also find out how to explore your subject by using Cambridge’s online catalogues and you’ll learn about some essential websites and online tools to locate information in your subject. (And we’ll show you how to borrow and return books!)

The Library web pages contain more information. If you have questions during the year, the Library staff are there to help you. Students can also request books to be bought, if you can’t find what you need for your undergraduate studies.
