Sports

Sport is an important part of student life at Queens’ – ranging from playing for fun and exercise to pursuing elite level challenges. The College has a fine sporting tradition, producing many Olympians and other international sportsmen and women.

There are Queens’ teams in the following sports: Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rowing (Boat Club), Rugby, Running, Sailing, Squash, Table Tennis, Tennis, Volleyball, Water Polo.

The Sports Ground at Barton Road is one of the best in Cambridge and short cycle ride away. Students play athletics, badminton, basketball, chess, cricket, croquet, cross country, football, hockey, lacrosse, netball, pool, rowing, rugby, skiing, snowboarding, squash, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and water polo. Facilities

Main Site Facilities

The following sports facilities are available on the College main site (Lyon Court):

  • Two squash courts. Courts may be booked and keys signed out from the Porters’ Lodge. The squash courts are administered by the Squash Club.
  • The Fitzpatrick Hall is available for use as a badminton court. The room may be booked through the Catering Office.
  • The Bowett Room may be used for table tennis. The room may be booked through the Catering Office. When not otherwise booked, it may be used for table tennis without booking.
  • A Multigym is available to subscribing members.
  • Changing rooms with showers are also available in Lyon Court.
The Multigym

The College has a small Multigym situated in Lyon Court. The Multigym is equipped with two stationary cycles, a leg curl/extension machine, a hip flexion machine, a squat machine, two treadmills, two cross trainers and multi-station with bench press, pull down, a chin-up bar.

  • Membership is limited to a maximum of 300 people, which is allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, and runs annually from the 1 October until 30 September of the following year.
  • Membership is available only to full time resident members of College, Fellows and Staff.
  • Members from previous years have been contacted allocated membership at their request.
  • Membership this year will be free of charge, this will be reviewed yearly.
  • New members will only be granted access to the Multigym after they have view the an online induction video and completed a questionnaire below.

Sportsground

The sports ground is located close to the college and caters for most sports. It has two pavilions with changing facilities, showers, toilets and club room. Shared with King’s, Selwyn and Robinson Colleges, the sports ground is available for use by all College members and staff.

Currently we have:

  • 7 football pitches
  • 2 rugby pitches
  • 1 women’s lacrosse pitch
  • 1 men’s lacrosse pitch
  • 6 hard tennis courts
  • 3 grass tennis courts
  • 2 netball courts
  • 2 cricket squares
  • 6 grass cricket nets

Use of the facilities can be arranged with the Groundsman, Mark Reeder. To arrange a sports fixture, practice match or casual game please refer to the Sports Ground Procedures.

Getting to the Sportsground

Cyclists and pedestrians

Head out of the city on the Barton Road A603. Turn left into Grantchester Street, then turn right into Fulbrooke Road, and enter the King’s College Sports Ground at the end of Fulbrooke Road. Proceed along the marked path from King’s College pavilion across the ground to Queens’ College Pavilion. When returning to college, take the reverse route.

Motor vehicles

By car, take the A603 Barton Road out of Cambridge. After passing a major lay-by, the Sports Ground entrance is on the left, preceded by a small deceleration lane.

If approaching from outside Cambridge, take exit 12 from the M11 and approach Cambridge on the A603. The Sports Ground entrance is hidden behind the first large hedge on the right.

Parking is available at the Sports Ground for bona fide users of the facilities there.

Dinners and Bursaries

There is an annual Blues Dinner, hosted by the Fellows, to celebrate the achievements of our sportsmen and women who participate at University level.

There are signficant post-matriculation sports bursaries at Queens’ to help with students pursuing both College sport and elite level sport.

The University also has a Cambridge Athlete Performance Programme (UCAPP) which supports the development of world class athletes, of whom Fiona Bunn (Queens’) is one.
