College

I give supervisions in Medieval European History and History of Political Thought from the ancient Greeks up to c.1700 and am available to supervise dissertations in these areas.  I also hold classes in Historical Argument and Practice.

Research

My research and publications are in the field of the History of Political Thought in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.  My publications include The Political Thought of Baldus de Ubaldis (Cambridge University Press, 1987), A History of Medieval Political Thought, 300-1450 (London: Routledge, 1996), Ideas of Power in the Late Middle Ages, 1296-1417 (Cambridge University Press, 2011) and Conciliarism, Humanism and Law.  Justifications of Authority and Power, c.1400-c.1520 (Cambridge University Press, July 2021).  I am currently engaged in a research topic exploring the development of ideas of power and authority in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.

I am a member of the History of Political Thought and Intellectual History subject group and serve as an examiner for the MPhil in that area.
