The College offers financial support directed towards the educational and research activities of its postgraduate student community through a number of postgraduate studentships and grants.
Queens’ College offers the following postgraduate studentships, (please note the John Lawrence and Stephen Thomas studentships are only available once every three years).
Open to applicants commencing an MPhil in Middle Eastern Studies, International Relations, History or related fields, concentrating in the area of Middle Eastern Studies (next available October 2027).
This scholarship, established in memory of Abba Eban, provides financial support for a postgraduate student taking an MPhil in International Relations, History, or related fields, concentrating in the area of Middle Eastern studies.
The value of the award will be up to £3,000 and is tenable for one year. The competition is open to all postgraduate students, intending to commence an MPhil, from 1 October.
Holders must become members of the College.
The award of a Scholarship is conditional upon being accepted by the relevant University Department (via PAO).

Open to applicants commencing a PhD in Economics
Queens’ College and The Janeway Institute are pleased to offer a 3-year doctoral scholarship, which can be extended to a 4th year. The scholarship is £6,000 per year, which will be reduced to £3,000 per year if the successful candidate is already fully funded from other sources. The scholarship is open to applicants for the PhD in Economics. In order to be considered for the scholarship, the candidate has to indicate Queens’ College as their first choice college in their application to the University’s Postgraduate Admissions Office (PAO). All candidates who have been successfully admitted to the PhD programme and who put Queens’ as the first choice college will be considered. The successful candidate may be required to supervise undergraduate students at Queens’ for up to 40 hours per year. The supervisions will be paid separately.

The Alexander Crummell PhD Scholarships are exciting new opportunities for UK-based students who would not otherwise have the means to consider continuing on to postgraduate level study. These are “full ride” scholarships meaning that all fees and maintenance costs are covered.
The College has, since 2020, created more than 19 new postgraduate scholarships (full cost) in science and arts-based subjects for UK-domiciled candidates from “access” backgrounds.
The Alexander Crummell PhD Scholarships, are intended for candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds or those currently under-represented at the University (these candidates will be identified using established criteria, including those currently used for undergraduate admissions). Priority will be given to students with Black or Black-Mixed ethnicity, and at the current time we are restricting applications to only these students. These Scholarships will be available for students studying for the PhD degree in STEM subjects at the University of Cambridge.
Priority will be given to those students who have indicated Queens’ College as their first college preference in the application to the University’s Postgraduate Admissions Office.

The Cambridge Trust offers scholarships and part-cost bursaries to students from Overseas and the European Union (excluding the United Kingdom) who have been accepted for admission at the University of Cambridge to pursue a full time course of study or research.
The Cambridge Trust currently supports over 2,000 students in residence at Cambridge and gratefully acknowledge the generous help they have received from their many donors and collaborators.

The John Lawrence Cambridge International Scholarship is offered once every three years.
The award is a combined award offered in conjunction with the Cambridge Trust, and is a three year fees and maintenance award, available to an international PhD applicant in any subject, from Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Mr John Lawrence OBE matriculated at Queens’ in 1953 to read English. He worked for the British Council in Brazil, Malaysia, Sudan & Zambia supporting students in the furtherance of their academic careers. A gift in his will enabled this Scholarship to be created.

From 2020 to 2024 the College offered a combined funding award agreement with the prestigious USA-based Stamps Scholars Programs.
The value of a Stamps award up to £8000 p.a., which used towards fees or maintenance, plus an enrichment fund up to £6000 over three years. This is equivalent to £2000 p.a. but, unless there is a compelling reason, it is preferred that this be used in the second and third years. The Foundation places great emphasis on enrichment of the student experience, by which is meant spending time on activities that go beyond the normal confines of the academic environment. The Stephen Thomas Cambridge International Studentship is offered once every three years and will next be available in October 2029.
The award is a combined award offered in conjunction with the Cambridge Trust, and is a three year fees and maintenance award, available to an overseas PhD applicant in Engineering or Computer Science.

This studentship has been made possible by the endowment generously bestowed upon Queens’ College by friends of Stephen G Thomas (Engineering 1971). Stephen obtained a double first from Cambridge and in his third year won the Ricardo Prize for Engineering. He was a generous supporter of Queens’, an entrepreneur, a manager of high-growth companies and a business angel. His business skills and entrepreneurial expertise were inspirational and he was well liked in the Cambridge business community. He was a keen sailor, explorer and mountaineer. Stephen passed away as a result of an accident in January 2005 in Antarctica the day after achieving his lifetime’s ambition of sailing his yacht, Magic Dragon, from 80 degrees north to 65 degrees south.

The Allianz Scholarships at Queens’ College aim to support postgraduate students undertaking specific courses from the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Technology and the School of Physical Sciences offered by the University of Cambridge.

This scholarship, named after the first female Senior Tutor at Queens’ College, Dr Kareen Thorne, aims to support annually a student in financial need. Dr Thorne held the position of Senior Tutor between 1993 and 1999 and is now a Fellow Commoner of Queens’. She is also a graduate of Newnham College and a former Fellow (and first female Fellow and Senior Tutor) of Trinity Hall.
The Kareen Thorne Scholarship is intended for candidates from disadvantaged backgrounds (these candidates will be identified using established criteria, including those currently used for undergraduate admissions). Annual bursary to a student of Arab-origin or citizenship (availability to be confirmed).
The President of Queens’ College, Dr Mohamed El-Erian, was honoured in 2023 with the Great Arab Minds Award in the Economics category. The President and his family have generously decided to use the award to establish a Postgraduate Bursary at Queens’ College.
The Great Arab Minds Bursary will provide an annual bursary to a student of Arab-origin or citizenship. This is defined for the College’s purposes, normally, as a citizen of one of the members of the Arab League countries or those who have relevant dual citizenship.

The awards are available to students undertaking part-time research degrees, such as part-time PhD or research MPhil courses, and some part-time taught MPhil courses. However, it is not available to students undertaking dedicated part-time taught courses, such as those leading to the award of Master of Studies (MSt), Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) or Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip).
For candidates who hold other awards, Queens’ will adjust the actual value of its awards so as to ensure that the total package available to any recipient does not exceed the total annual costs of the course (including maintenance) published by the Postgraduate Admissions Office.
