A Deeper Field of View: The Medieval Foundations of our World
Monday September 28th 2026, 10:00-16:30
- Share your passion for the past and explore all things medieval
- meet experts in English literature, Anglo-Saxon Norse and Celtic Studies, History of Art, Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and Archaeology.
- Find out about the range of degree courses available at the University of Cambridge.
- See the architecture of the medieval university, and view precious medieval manuscripts.

A total of 30 places are available: 12 over-night residential places, arriving on the night of Sunday September 27th, and 18 day places for Monday September 28th only.

AM I ELIGIBLE FOR A PLACE?
To be eligible, you must:
- be entering Y12 (in England and Wales), Y13 (in Northern Ireland) or S5 (in Scotland) in the academic year 2026/27
- have an interest in one or more aspects of the Medieval world.
- be on track to achieve Grade 7 or above in at least 5 GCSEs (or National 5s in Scotland), including at least 4 relevant subjects (e.g. languages, English, art, history, music, religious studies).
- be planning to study at least one relevant subject in Y12 (in England and Wales), Y13 (in Northern Ireland) or S5 (in Scotland)a.
CAN I STAY OVERNIGHT?
- A total of 12 over-night residential places are available for students arriving on the night of Sunday September 27th.
- Priority for six residential places will be given to students from the Bradford area (e.g. Bradford, Bingley, Ilkley, Keighley), who will also be offered free escorted travel to and from Cambridge.
- A further six residential places will be offered to other students travelling long distances (approx. 3 hours travel time or longer).
- All other participants are expected to make their own way to Queens’ College by 10 a.m. on Monday September 28th.
CAN I GET HELP WITH TRANSPORT COSTS?
- A number of travel bursaries are available to cover transport costs for students currently eligible for Free School Meals.
WHEN WILL I HEAR WHETHER I HAVE A PLACE?
Places will be allocated in August 2026. We will contact you by email to let you know if you have been allocated a place.
If you are offered a place, we will ask you to confirm that you have met the academic requirements, and we will contact your parent/guardian and to seek their permission for you to take part.
HOW WILL YOU ALLOCATE PLACES?
Should we have more eligible applications than places, we will prioritise students in line with the priorities of the University of Cambridge Access and Participation Plan. Priority will be given to students who meet any of the following (alongside strong academic achievement and relevant subject interests):
- Students who have not yet had the opportunity to participate in a summer school/residential or taster event at Cambridge.
- Students who are care-experienced (i.e. have spent time/are currently in local authority care or kinship care), refugees, asylum seekers or those under humanitarian protection
- Students who are currently or previously eligible for government-funded free school meals, who receive the 16-19 bursary (England) or Education Maintenance Allowance (Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland).
- Students with a home postcode in the bottom 40% of postcodes in the Indices of Multiple Deprivation measure (IMD deciles 1-4/quintiles 1 and 2).
- Students from our Link Areas of Bradford, Kent, Medway and Havering.
- Students attending schools with low progression/little tradition of sending students to Cambridge.
- Students who would be the first generation in their family to progress to higher education (i.e. parents/carers have not attended university).
Please note we do not typically accept more than two students from any single school or college (of applications received – there is no limit on the number of applications from a single school or college).
