The Richard Fentiman Fellowship in Law

October 1st 2021 marked the 40th anniversary of Professor Richard Fentiman's admission as a Fellow of Queens' in 1981. A new Law Fellowship has been endowed in Professor Fentiman’s name to sit alongside those of Sir Arthur Armitage, Sir Derek Bowett and His Honour Judge Stuart Bridge.

Following the great success of endowing The Stuart Bridge Fellowship in Law, the College has now endowed a Law Fellowship in Professor Richard Fentiman’s name to mark his retirement in September 2023. This is the fourth and final fully endowed Law Fellowship at Queens’. Professor Fentiman himself currently holds The Arthur Armitage Fellowship and continues to make a remarkable contribution to legal teaching and research. A University Pilkington Prize for teaching excellence in 2014 was followed by Chairmanship of the Law Faculty 2015-18. He is also a King's Counsel honoris causa.

The Fellowship

This Fellowship has been named in perpetuity to help ensure that close supervision of Law students will continue at Queens’; there are approximately eight undergraduates in each year and four Law Fellows. There is also a thriving postgraduate community of LLM students and other researchers continuing the College’s proud reputation as a centre for legal studies. We have two fantastic LLM Studentships at Queens’ (Redress and Sternberg Bursaries), meaning more LLM students apply to Queens’ than any other College.

Thanks to the generosity of our alumni and supporters, this Fellowship endowment sits at a total of £600,000 which will produce an annual amount to cover the cost to the College of a senior University Teaching Officer from the Faculty of Law teaching at Queens’.

Those who donated at least £1,000 (net) will be invited to a dinner with the Law Fellows to celebrate the completion of the Fellowship.
