The Naked Scientists

Opportunity for a Two-Month Secondment with the Naked Scientists—Open to Doctoral Candidates

The Naked Scientists, based at the Institute of Continuing Education, consist of a team of scientists, doctors and communicators, whose passion it is to help the general public to understand and engage with the worlds of science, technology and medicine.

Launched in 2001, the Naked Scientists was one of the first podcasts to exist and is now one of the world’s most popular science shows, achieving over 50 million programme downloads in the last five years.  The Naked Scientists is also broadcast nationally and internationally on network radio, including BBC Radio 5 Live and ABC Radio National Australia.  The team has won nine national and international awards for science communication, including recognition in the Science Council’s 100 leading practising scientists, and the award of the Royal Society’s 2008 Kohn Medal.

An opportunity now exists for a Doctoral candidate to take up a two-month secondment with the Naked Scientists.  This will take the form of a ‘buy-out’ at the candidate’s prevailing stipend rate.  The placement will be based in the Naked Scientist’s offices at the University’s sub-department of Zoology.

The successful applicant will become experienced in broadcasting, writing, and online publishing.  The posting will provide a unique insight into the workings of the  media, but will also endow the participant with a transferable skillset that will support the candidate’s confidence and ability in delivering lectures and conference presentations, and writing papers and grants.

Interested candidates should seek the prior approval of their supervisor and/or funding authority to take up the posting and provide proof of approval, in principal.  The cost of the secondment will be funded by Queens’ College.

Candidates should submit:

 - An up-to-date CV

 - A statement of not more than 750 words explaining why you wish to apply and what use you would make of the enhanced communications training.

 - A brief reference from your Doctoral Supervisor
