Notes on Typical Systems

Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7 comes complete with all software required to connect to the college network for the TCP/IP protocol suite and applications (such as e-mail and web browsing). Windows also comes with the Client for Microsoft Networks to enable peer-to-peer sharing with other Windows machines in college. Direct connections (network drive mappings) to your personal directory on the PWF filestore will require installation of the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks and possibly the Service for NetWare Directory Services, from the Windows installation CD-ROM.

Apple Macintoshes come complete with all networking software required to use the TCP/IP protocol suite (for e-mail and web-browsing), and the EtherTalk protocol that permits connection to the PWF filestore, and peer-to-peer sharing with other Macs in college.

Linux machines will have to look after themselves - owners of Linux are expected to know what to do to enable networking. Linux users might have to reconfigure Linux networking from its default state in order to comply with the Conditions of Service given above.
