Configuring Apple Macintosh - Pre OSX

Open the TCP/IP control panel.
  • Select Connect via: to be Ethernet.
  • Select Configure: to be Manually.
  • In the field IP Address: enter the IP number you have been given, e.g.: 131.111.xxx.xxx
  • In the field Subnet mask: enter the sub-net mask you have been given, e.g.: 255.255.0.0
  • In the field Router address: enter the router or gateway address you have been given, e.g.: 131.111.xxx.62
  • In the field Name Server addr.: enter the name server addresses you have been given, each on a line of its own, e.g.:
       131.111.8.42
        131.111.12.20
  • In the field Search domains: enter cam.ac.uk
Close the TCP/IP control panel and select Save.
Open the AppleTalk control panel.
  • Select Connect via: to be Ethernet.
    (however, if you have a printer connected using LocalTalk, please seek advice).
  • If a User defined check-box is visible, ensure that it is unchecked.
Close the AppleTalk control panel and select Save.
Open the File Sharing control panel.
  • Bring the Start/Stop tab to the front.
  • In the field Owner Name: enter your CRSid, e.g.: spqr23
  • In the field Owner Password: enter a secret password.
  • In the field Computer Name: enter your CRSid, e.g. spqr23
  • You may click File Sharing Start if you wish to access your shared files from other Macs in the College.
  • If you have Mac OS 9 or higher, you may check Enable File Sharing clients to connect over TCP/IP to access your shared files from any other Mac on the Internet.
  • You are advised to keep Program Linking turned off.
Close the File Sharing control panel.
Open the Internet control panel.
  • Bring the Personal tab to the front.
    • In the field Name: enter your real name.
    • In the field E-mail Address: enter your CRSid@cam.ac.uk, e.g.: spqr23@cam.ac.uk
    • In the field Organization: enter Queens' College Cambridge
  • Bring the E-mail tab to the front.
    • In the field User Account ID: enter your CRSid, e.g.: spqr23
    • In the field Incoming Mail Server: enter imap.hermes.cam.ac.uk
      (unless you wish to use pop.hermes.cam.ac.uk for the POP3 service).
    • Leave the field Password: blank.
    • In the field Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server: enter smtp.hermes.cam.ac.uk
  • Bring the Web tab to the front.
    • In the field Home Page: enter /
    • In the field Search Page: enter http://www.cam.ac.uk/Searching/index.html#netwide
  • Bring the News tab to the front.
    • In the field News (NNTP) Server: enter nntp-serv.cam.ac.uk
    • Select Connect to news server as: Guest.
  • If you cannot see an Advanced tab:
    • Pull down the Edit menu and select User Mode...
    • Select Advanced and click OK.
  • Bring the Advanced tab to the front.
  • Scroll down the left-hand box, and select Firewalls.
    • Ensure that SOCKS Firewall is unchecked and the address field left blank.
    • For each of the three lines Web Proxy:, Gopher Proxy:, and FTP Proxy: do:
      • Ensure the check-box is checked.
      • In the next field enter wwwcache.cam.ac.uk
      • In the field Port: enter 8080
    • Click on the button FTP Proxy Options...
      • Ensure that the check-box Connect to FTP proxy server as a registered user is unchecked, and click OK.
    • In the box Bypass proxies for these hosts: type the following entries each on a line of its own:
           *.ac.uk
           *.ja.net
           .ac.uk
           .ja.net
           sunsite.org.uk
Close the Internet control panel and select Save.
The above should have automatically configured parts of  Microsoft Outlook Express.
The recommended e-mail client is Mulberry which you can download free from http://www.cam.ac.uk/cs/docs/faq/e22.html#Mac (choose the highest version).
 

If you are running Mac OS 8.5x, the free update to Mac OS 8.6 (49 MB download) is highly recommended.
If you are running Mac OS 8.6, it is essential that you install the Font Manager Update if you have not already done so.
If you are running Mac OS 9.0 or higher, you may use the Software Update control panel to keep your system up to date. The first thing you should do is to apply any updates to the Software Update control panel itself, then restart.
