A SupervisionAn essential part of the undergraduate education system at Cambridge is the system of Supervisions. A Supervision is a small class (typically two students to one supervisor), usually held once per week in each subject or paper the student is studying. Thus a student might attend from one to four supervisions per week, depending on the subject(s) the student is reading.
The University of Cambridge organises the lectures, laboratory classes and examinations, but Supervisions are organised on a collegiate basis, and arrangements differ from one college to another. Supervisions ensure that students get individual attention, at a pace which suits them.
It is not uncommon for supervisions to occur during the early evening, as in this photograph, because both students and supervisors tend to have busy timetables during the day.
Here you see a Fellow of Queens' giving a Geology supervision to two first-year Natural Science students. Through the window can just be discerned the Long Gallery.
