Cloister Court ca 1855
Cloister Court, view towards Hall and Erasmus Tower, photo ca 1855
This very early photograph of Cloister Court was taken before 1857/58.
Items to note are:
- The window of Hall shows the tracery that Dawkes added to the plain
mullions in 1846. In 1857/58, these windows would be altered again: they
would be heightened, and new tracery would be fitted.
- Battlements have not yet arrived. They were built much later on this
elevation than on the inner elevations of Old Court and Walnut Tree Court.
Browne & Seltman quote a date of "about 1860" for the battlements,
without giving reasons. Is it possible that the battlements were added
at the same time as the windows were raised? This is the only known photograph
of the 1448/49 buildings before the addition of battlements. The eaves
board here perhaps gives us a clue as to the appearance of Old Court before
battlements were fitted there ca 1819.
- The two windows to the right of the large Hall window are curiously
cut down, perhaps indicating lowered ceiling levels inside.
