Standing room only for Brexit debate

On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome back two Queens' alumnifresh from the House of Commons, to lead a debate on the EU referendum for the students, staff and fellows of the College.

Despite being in the midst of exams, every seat in Old Hall was occupied by students, staff and fellows wanting to participate in this topical discussion

Suella Fernandes MP (Law, 1998) argued for the Leave campaign, and Stephen Kinnock MP (MML, 1988) for Remain, while the President, Lord Eatwell, moderated.

The speakers spoke for 15 minutes each, followed by questions from the audience for a further 30 minutes. Both speakers took a measured stance in their respective camps and presented clear arguments tackling trade, sovereignty and immigration.  The legitimacy of European Commission, the Swiss model and the importance of the Magna Carta were all debated.  They closed the debate by encouraging all present to cast their votes on 23 June.  Hopefully, it has given all at Queens’ food for thought before the referendum.
