RAF hero returns to Queens'

A member of the College who flew in the first air-raid over Berlin in World War Two returned to Queens' today for a special lunch.

Ruari Chisholm DFC, now aged 93, came up to the College in 1939 to read Engineering and flew Wellington bombers on many dangerous raids, ending the war as a Flight Lieutenant decorated for bravery. Ruari was told that his bomber was unlikely to have the range to make it back from the Berlin raid, and he should fly to Greece if fuel was running low. However, Ruari had just got engaged so was determined to fly back to England, which he did.

His son, Sir John Chisholm (1965), brought his father back to College for lunch in the Old Senior Combination Room, hosted by the Fellows.

The College presented Ruari with a special Queens'/University scarf to mark the occasion of his visit.
