MCR talk: The Colony, the Club and the Corporation: The Persistence of Gentlemanly Culture in Indian Industry.

Speaker: Shachi Amdekar

In the history of Indian industrialisation, it is possible to plot how networks of manufacturing elites emerged during the 19th century Bombay via Anglo-Indian agency – namely by exchange of emerging technology, finance and political patronage. This research uses archival data and elite interviews to examine the emergence and persistence of these networks of elite industrial houses based on the theory of gentlemanly capitalism (Cain and Hopkins, 1986).
