Students

With changes in the fee structure and the pressure to admit and provide for increasing numbers of Graduate Students, we as a College need to be in a position to help all of our students, graduate and undergraduate in four target areas: Scholarships and Bursaries at various levels from £700 pa to £20,000 pa each; Hardship £175,000 pa; Travel £30,000 pa; and Prizes as incentives for Undergraduates at £1,000 pa each.

An example of such support and the difference that it can make to an individual Queens’ student stands out from our records. One particular candidate’s school reports and their participation in international competition marked them out as an exceptional scholar and, always on the lookout for such talent, we had no hesitation about accepting the application. However, this candidate's personal circumstances were such that they had no means of financial support, no access to grants or funding and there was no possibility of any parental contribution.

Queens’ is committed to fully funding the accommodation, fees and maintenance of this student at an annual cost of £20,000 for all four years of their time with us, and we were proud to do so. These cases are not going to diminish and we know that there are many more who need College support now, and in the future.

We are especially keen to improve the facilities and support for our Graduate Students and a fund has now been set up specifically for this purpose. The College recognises that Graduate Students who are usually older, often mid-career and with different personal circumstances, have very specific needs which include suitable accommodation, leisure and study facilities, scholarships and research and travel grants. It is our earnest hope that Queens’ Graduate Students of the past will commit to support our Graduate Students now and in the future.

When making a gift one of our Graduate Student Members recently wrote, “My donation is only a small recognition of the great debt I owe the College. At a crucial stage in my career, the College gave me a research grant which made my PhD research possible. If the College had not been so generous my academic career and all my subsequent publications would simply not have happened”.
