The War Memorial Library

The War Memorial Library

The Old Chapel was converted to the War Memorial Library in 1948. This conversion was so successful and the growth of the student numbers so marked that by the 1990s even more study space was required.
The answer was an imaginative yet sympathetic design respecting the history of the building, its role as a Chapel and War Memorial, while providing for the present and future needs, particularly of Queens' undergraduates.
A new structure was created inside the shell of the building, as a ship is inserted into a bottle, touching the walls in as few places as possible. Materials were chosen to emphasise light and create a welcoming atmosphere. Great care was taken to restore and preserve original panelling and wall paintings which were revealed during the work.
The result is a dynamic yet tranquil space providing a fine college facility and popular study area where each reader can find their “space” in a remarkable building of considerable antiquity.
