This bridge, carrying Garret Hostel Lane over the Cam, was erected by James Essex the Younger (1722-1784) in 1769. It was referred to in Cooper's Annals of Cambridge as a Mathematical Bridge. It is shown here for comparison with the design of the wooden bridge at Queens' College, previously built by Essex in 1749-50.
This Garret Hostel Bridge broke down in 1812.
This view appears to be southwards from Trinity Bridge, with Clare Bridge visible under the arch of Garret Hostel Bridge.
Drawn by Bt Leach. Engraved by R.H. Leach. The date of 1785 is guesswork.
